<strong>Q SOURCE (based on Luke, c. 50 C.E.)</strong><br><br>
<strong>Note that the Q source begins with John the Baptizer, not with Jesus. It might well be that the original document was about John and contained his teachings, now in the mouth of his disciple Jesus from Nazareth. From the small sample of John&rsquo;s teachings that we get from ( Luke 3:10-14), and this is about all we have to go on, the style and content is amazingly similar. And Luke also preserves for us the tradition that it was the tax collectors and sinners who responded to (John 7:29).</strong><br>

Luke 3:7-9 [John the Baptizer] said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, &ldquo;You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, &lsquo;we have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.&rdquo;<br>

John 3:16-17 John answered them all, &ldquo;I baptize you with water; but&nbsp;<em>he who is mightier than I is coming</em>, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.&rdquo;<br>

Luke 7:18-23 The disciples of John told him all these things. He answered them, &ldquo;Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up,&nbsp;<em>the poor have good news preached to them, and blessed is he who takes no offense at me</em>.&rdquo;<br>

<strong>The following text, though not formally considered part of Q (since Mark also has this saying), is in the context of the saying about John the Baptizer and his mission above, and it reminds us of the uncompromising stand John took with Herod Antipas and his &ldquo;wife&rdquo; Herodias as well as the strict position taken at Qumran regarding taking a second wife while the first is alive. Seems very likely that it too is an original teaching of John:</strong>16:18 Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.<br>

Matthew 11:14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.<br>

Matthew 11:20 Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.<br>
Matthew 11:21 &ldquo;Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.<br>
Matthew 11:22 But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.<br>
Matthew 11:23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.<br>
Matthew 11:24 But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.&rdquo;<br>

Matthew 14:3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip&rsquo;s wife;<br>
Matthew 14:4 because John said to him, &ldquo;It is not lawful for you to have her.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 14:5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.<br>
Matthew 14:6 But when Herod&rsquo;s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and pleased Herod,<br>
Matthew 14:7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.<br>
Matthew 14:8 Prompted by her mother, she said, &ldquo;Give me the head of John the Baptizer here on a platter.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 14:9 And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given;<br>
Matthew 14:10 he sent and had John beheaded in the prison,<br>
Matthew 14:11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.<br>
Matthew 14:12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.<br>
Matthew 14:13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.<br><br>
Matthew 16: 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, &ldquo;Who do men say that the Son of man is?&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 16:14 And they said, &ldquo;Some say John the Baptizer, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 16:15 He said to them, &ldquo;But who do you say that I am?&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter replied, &ldquo;You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.&rdquo;<br><br>
Matthew 17:9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, &ldquo;Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 17:10 And the disciples asked him, &ldquo;Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 17:11 He replied, &ldquo;Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things;<br>
Matthew 17:12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptizer.<br><br>
Matthew 21:23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, &ldquo;By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 21:24 Jesus answered them, &ldquo;I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.<br>
Matthew 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?&rdquo; And they argued with one another, &ldquo;If we say, &lsquo;From heaven,&rsquo; he will say to us, &lsquo;Why then did you not believe him?&rsquo;<br>
Matthew 21:26 But if we say, &lsquo;From men,&rsquo; we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet.&rdquo;<br>
Matthew 21:27 So they answered Jesus, &ldquo;We do not know.&rdquo; And he said to them, &ldquo;Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.<br>

Luke 1:5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.<br>
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.<br>
Luke 1:7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.<br>
Luke 1:8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,<br>
Luke 1:9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.<br>
Luke 1:10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.<br>
Luke 1:11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.<br>
Luke 1:12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.<br>
Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him, &ldquo;Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.<br>
Luke 1:14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth;<br>
Luke 1:15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother&rsquo;s womb.<br>
Luke 1:16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,<br>
Luke 1:17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:18 And Zechariah said to the angel, &ldquo;How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:19 And the angel answered him, &ldquo;I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.<br>
Luke 1:20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple.<br>
Luke 1:22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb.<br>
Luke 1:23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.<br>
Luke 1:24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying,<br>
Luke 1:25 &ldquo;Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,<br>
Luke 1:27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin&rsquo;s name was Mary.<br>
Luke 1:28 And he came to her and said, &ldquo;Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.<br>
Luke 1:30 And the angel said to her, &ldquo;Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.<br>
Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.<br>

Luke 1:36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.<br>
Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:38 And Mary said, &ldquo;Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.&rdquo; And the angel departed from her.<br>
Luke 1:39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,<br>
Luke 1:40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.<br>
Luke 1:41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit<br>
Luke 1:42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, &ldquo;Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!<br>
Luke 1:43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?<br>
Luke 1:44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.<br>
Luke 1:45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:46 And Mary said, &ldquo;My soul magnifies the Lord,<br>
Luke 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,<br>
Luke 1:48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;<br>
Luke 1:49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.<br>
Luke 1:50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.<br>
Luke 1:51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,<br>

Luke 1:58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.<br>
Luke 1:59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father,<br>
Luke 1:60 but his mother said, &ldquo;Not so; he shall be called John.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:61 And they said to her, &ldquo;None of your kindred is called by this name.&rdquo;<br>
Luke 1:62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called.<br>
Luke 1:63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, &ldquo;His name is John.&rdquo; And they all marveled.<br>

RSV Luke 3:1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,<br>
Luke 3:2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness;<br>
Luke 3:3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.<br>
Luke 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, &ldquo;The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.<br>

Luke 3:17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.&rdquo;<br>

Luke 11:16 &ldquo;The law and the prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it violently.<br>
Luke 11:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one dot of the law to become void.<br>

Acts 1:1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,<br>
Acts 1:2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.<br>
Acts 1:3 To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God.<br>
Acts 1:4 And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, &ldquo;you heard from me,<br>
Acts 1:5 for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.&rdquo;<br>
Acts 1:6 So when they had come together, they asked him, &ldquo;Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?&rdquo;<br>
Acts 1:7 He said to them, &ldquo;It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority.<br>
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.&rdquo;<br><br>
Acts 1:21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,<br>
Acts 1:22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us &mdash; one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.&rdquo;<br>

Acts 11:5 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning.<br>

Acts 13:24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.<br>
Acts 13:25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, `What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.&rsquo;<br>
Acts 13:26 &ldquo;Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.<br>
Acts 13:27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him.<br>
Acts 13:28 Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed.<br>
Acts 13:29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb.<br>

Acts 13:31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.<br>
Acts 13:32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,<br>

Acts 13:34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he spoke in this way, `I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.&rsquo;<br>
Acts 13:35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, `Thou wilt not let thy Holy One see corruption.&rsquo;<br>
Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served the counsel of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers, and saw corruption;<br>

John 1:39 He said to them, &ldquo;Come and see.&rdquo; They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.<br>
John 1:40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter&rsquo;s brother.<br>
John 1:41 He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, &ldquo;We have found the Messiah&rdquo; (which means Christ).<br>
John 1:42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, &ldquo;So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas&rdquo; (which means Peter).<br>
John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, &ldquo;Follow me.&rdquo;<br>
John 1:44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.<br>
John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, &ldquo;We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.&rdquo;<br>
John 1:46 Nathanael said to him, &ldquo;Can anything good come out of Nazareth?&rdquo; Philip said to him, &ldquo;Come and see.&rdquo;<br>
John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, &ldquo;Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!&rdquo;<br>
