John the Baptizer in the Gospel Traditions
Q SOURCE (based on Luke, c. 50 C.E.)
Note that the Q source begins with John the Baptizer, not with Jesus. It might well be that the original document was about John and contained his teachings, now in the mouth of his disciple Jesus from Nazareth. From the small sample of John’s teachings that we get from ( Luke 3:10-14), and this is about all we have to go on, the style and content is amazingly similar. And Luke also preserves for us the tradition that it was the tax collectors and sinners who responded to (John 7:29).
Luke 3:7-9 [John the Baptizer] said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘we have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
Luke 3:16-17 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Luke 7:18-23 The disciples of John told him all these things. John calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, ‘Are you he who is to come, or shall we look or another?” When the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptizer has sent us to you, saying, Are you he who is to come or shall we look for another?’ In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. He answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them, and blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
Luke 7:24-26 When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet .
Luke 7:27 This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee .
Luke 7:28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John ; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
Luke 7:31-34 To what shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.John the Baptizer has come eating no bread and drinking no wine ; and you say, He has a demon.’ The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Luke 7:35 Wisdom is justified by all her children.”
Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets were until John ; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it violently.
The disciples of Jesus ask to be taught to pray as John had taught his disciples. Accordingly, this could very well be the very prayer John taught:The following text, though not formally considered part of Q (since Mark also has this saying), is in the context of the saying about John the Baptizer and his mission above, and it reminds us of the uncompromising stand John took with Herod Antipas and his “wife” Herodias as well as the strict position taken at Qumran regarding taking a second wife while the first is alive. Seems very likely that it too is an original teaching of John:16:18 Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
The following material, attributed to Jesus, but without any context, could well reflect the original teachings of the Baptizer:Luke 11:2-4 When you pray, say, ‘Father, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.’
Luke 6:20b-21 Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh.6:22-23 Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
Luke 6:27-28 But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
John 6:29 To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your cloak do not withhold your coat as well.
Luke 6:30 Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again.
Luke 6:31 As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.
Luke 6:32-35 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.
Luke 6:36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:37-38 Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; and give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”
Luke 6:39 Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
Luke 6:40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one when he is fully taught will be like his teacher.
Luke 6:41-42 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
Luke 6:43-44 For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit, For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
Luke 6:45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Luke 6:46 Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Luke 6:47-49 Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and built the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.
Luke 11:39-41 You Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of extortion and wickedness. You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? But give for alms those things which are within and behold, everything is clean for you.
Luke 11:42 Woe to you Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
Luke 11:43 Woe to you Pharisees! for you love the best seat in the synagogues and salutations in the Market places.

Luke 11:46 Woe to you lawyers also! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

Luke 11:49-51 The Wisdom of God said, “I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.
Luke 11:52 Woe to you lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves and you hindered those who were entering.
Luke 12:22 Do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat nor about your body, what you shall put on.

Luke 12:25-26 Which of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?
Luke 12:27 Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Luke 12:28 But if God so clothes the grass which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O men of little faith!
Luke 12:29-30 Do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be of anxious mind. For all the nations of the world seek these things; and your Father knows that you need them. Instead seek his kingdom, and these things shall be yours as well.
Luke 12:33-34 Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide your selves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Mark 1:2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way;
Mark 1:3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight — ”
Mark 1:4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Mark 1:5 And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Mark 1:6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey.
Mark 1:7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
Mark 1:8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Mark 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Mark 1:10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove;
Mark 1:11 and a voice came from heaven, “Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.”
Mark 1:12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
Mark 1:13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.
Mark 1:14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
Mark 1:15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Mark 2:18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”
Mark 1:19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
Mark 1:20 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
Mark 1:21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.
Mark 1:22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but new wine is for fresh skins.”
Mark 6:7 And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. . . Mark 1:12 So they went out and preached that men should repent.
Mark 6:13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.
Mark 6:14 King Herod heard of it; for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him.”
Mark 6:15 But others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”
Mark 6:16 But when Herod heard of it he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”
Mark 6:17 For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; because he had married her.
Mark 6:18 For John said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
Mark 6:19 And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not,
Mark 6:20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly.
Mark 6:21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee.
Mark 6:22 For when Herodias’ daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it.”
Mark 6:23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.”
Mark 6:24 And she went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the baptizer.”
Mark 6:25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.”
Mark 6:26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.
Mark 6:27 And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison,
Mark 6:28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
Mark 6:29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
Mark 6:30 The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught.
Mark 6:31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
Mark 8:27 And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”
Mark 8:28 And they told him, “John the Baptizer; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets.”
Mark 8:29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”

Mark 9:9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of man should have risen from the dead.
Mark 9:10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what the rising from the dead meant.
Mark 9:11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Mark 9:12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things; and how is it written of the Son of man, that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
Mark 9:13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”
Mark 9:11:27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, Mark Mark 9:28 and they said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?”
Mark 9:29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Mark 9:30 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me.”
Mark 9:31 And they argued with one another, “If we say, `From heaven,’ he will say, `Why then did you not believe him?’
Mark 9:32 But shall we say, `From men’?” — they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet.

Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptizer, preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
Matthew 3:2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
Matthew 3:4 Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Matthew 3:5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan,
Matthew 3:6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Matthew 4:12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee;

Matthew 9:14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

Matthew 11:4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see:

Matthew 11:21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Matthew 11:22 But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.
Matthew 11:23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
Matthew 11:24 But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes;
Matthew 11:26 yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.
Matthew 11:27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 14:4 because John said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
Matthew 14:5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.
Matthew 14:6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and pleased Herod,
Matthew 14:7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
Matthew 14:8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptizer here on a platter.”
Matthew 14:9 And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given;
Matthew 14:10 he sent and had John beheaded in the prison,
Matthew 14:11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
Matthew 14:12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.
Matthew 14:13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
Matthew 16: 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?”
Matthew 16:14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptizer, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Matthew 16:15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Matthew 17:9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead.”
Matthew 17:10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Matthew 17:11 He replied, “Elijah does come, and he is to restore all things;
Matthew 17:12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of man will suffer at their hands.”
Matthew 17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptizer.
Matthew 21:23 And when he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”
Matthew 21:24 Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you a question; and if you tell me the answer, then I also will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Matthew 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
Matthew 21:26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the multitude; for all hold that John was a prophet.”
Matthew 21:27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Luke 1:5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Luke 1:7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years.
Luke 1:8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,
Luke 1:9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
Luke 1:10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
Luke 1:11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
Luke 1:12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
Luke 1:14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth;
Luke 1:15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
Luke 1:16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God,
Luke 1:17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”
Luke 1:18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”
Luke 1:19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.
Luke 1:20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”
Luke 1:21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple.
Luke 1:22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb.
Luke 1:23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home.
Luke 1:24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying,
Luke 1:25 “Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.”
Luke 1:26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
Luke 1:27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
Luke 1:28 And he came to her and said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
Luke 1:29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.
Luke 1:30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Luke 1:31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
Luke 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
Luke 1:33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:34 And Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, since I have no husband?”
Luke 1:35 And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
Luke 1:36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
Luke 1:37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Luke 1:38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,
Luke 1:40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
Luke 1:41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
Luke 1:42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
Luke 1:43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Luke 1:44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.
Luke 1:45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
Luke 1:46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
Luke 1:47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
Luke 1:48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
Luke 1:49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
Luke 1:50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
Luke 1:51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
Luke 1:52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;
Luke 1:53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
Luke 1:54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
Luke 1:55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever.”
Luke 1:56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.
Luke 1:57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son.
Luke 1:58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
Luke 1:59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father,
Luke 1:60 but his mother said, “Not so; he shall be called John.”
Luke 1:61 And they said to her, “None of your kindred is called by this name.”
Luke 1:62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called.
Luke 1:63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all marveled.
Luke 1:64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
Luke 1:65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea;
Luke 1:66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Luke 1:67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Luke 1:68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he has visited and redeemed his people,
Luke 1:69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,
Luke 1:70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
Luke 1:71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;
Luke 1:72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
Luke 1:73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
Luke 1:74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,
Luke 1:75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
Luke 1:76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
Luke 1:77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,
Luke 1:78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high
Luke 1:79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Luke 1:80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
RSV Luke 3:1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
Luke 3:2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness;
Luke 3:3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Luke 3:5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
Luke 3:6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
Luke 3:7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Luke 3:8 Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
Luke 3:9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
Luke 3:10 And the multitudes asked him, “What then shall we do?”
Luke 3:11 And he answered them, “He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”
Luke 3:12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”
Luke 3:13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than is appointed you.”
Luke 3:14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
Luke 3:15 As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ,
Luke 3:16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Luke 3:17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Luke 3:18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people.
Luke 3:19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,
Luke 3:20 added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened,

Luke 7:13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
Luke 7:14 And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
Luke 7:15 And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.
Luke 7:16 Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!”
Luke 7:17 And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.
Luke 7:18 The disciples of John told him of all these things.
Luke 7:19 And John, calling to him two of his disciples, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?”
Luke 7:20 And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptizer has sent us to you, saying, `Are you he who is to come, or shall we look for another?'”
Luke 7:21 In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.
Luke 7:22 And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them.
Luke 7:23 And blessed is he who takes no offense at me.”
Luke 7:24 When the messengers of John had gone, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind?
Luke 7:25 What then did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.
Luke 7:26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
Luke 7:27 This is he of whom it is written, `Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.’
Luke 7:28 I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
Luke 7:29 (When they heard this all the people and the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John;
Luke 7:30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)
Luke 7:31 “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
Luke 7:32 They are like children sitting in the market place and calling to one another, `We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.’
Luke 7:33 For John the Baptizer has come eating no bread and drinking no wine; and you say, `He has a demon.’
Luke 7:34 The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Luke 7:35 Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”
Luke 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
Luke 9:8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen.
Luke 9:9 Herod said, “John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.
Luke 9:18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, “Who do the people say that I am?”
Luke 9:19 And they answered, “John the Baptizer; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen.”
Luke 9:20 And he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
Luke 9:21 But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one,
Luke 9:22 saying, “The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Luke 11:1 He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”
Luke 11:2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Luke 11:3 Give us each day our daily bread;
Luke 11:4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation.”
Luke 11: 14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they scoffed at him.
Luke 11:15 But he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts; for what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Luke 11:16 “The law and the prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and every one enters it violently.
Luke 11:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one dot of the law to become void.
Luke 11:18 “Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
Luke 20:1 One day, as he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up
Luke 20:2 and said to him, “Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority.”
Luke 20:3 He answered them, “I also will ask you a question; now tell me,
Luke 20:4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?”
Luke 20:5 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, `From heaven,’ he will say, `Why did you not believe him?’
Luke 20:6 But if we say, `From men,’ all the people will stone us; for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”
Luke 20:7 So they answered that they did not know whence it was.
Luke 20:8 And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
ACTS
Acts 1:1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,
Acts 1:2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.
Acts 1:3 To them he presented himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:4 And while staying with them he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me,
Acts 1:5 for John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 1:6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
Acts 1:7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has fixed by his own authority.
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
Acts 1:22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us — one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
Acts 1:23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Acts 10:36 You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),
Acts 10: 37 the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached:
Acts 10: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
Acts 10: 39 And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree;
Acts 10: 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest;
Acts 10: 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
Acts 10: 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead.
Acts 10: 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Acts 11:5 As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning.
Acts 11:16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
Acts 11:17 If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
Acts 11:18 When they heard this they were silenced. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life.”
Acts 13:7 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
Acts 13:18 And for about forty years he bore with them in the wilderness.
Acts 13:19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years.
Acts 13:20 And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
Acts 13:21 Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; of whom he testified and said, `I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
Acts 13:23 Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
Acts 13:24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
Acts 13:25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, `What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
Acts 13:26 “Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.
Acts 13:27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him.
Acts 13:28 Though they could charge him with nothing deserving death, yet they asked Pilate to have him killed.
Acts 13:29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb.
Acts 13:30 But God raised him from the dead;
Acts 13:31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
Acts 13:32 And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,
Acts 13:33 this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee.’
Acts 13:34 And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he spoke in this way, `I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
Acts 13:35 Therefore he says also in another psalm, `Thou wilt not let thy Holy One see corruption.’
Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served the counsel of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers, and saw corruption;
Acts 13:37 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption.
Acts 13:38 Let it be known to you therefore, brethren, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
Acts 13:39 and by him every one that believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
Acts 18:24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the scriptures.
Acts 18:25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.
Acts 18:26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and expounded to him the way of God more accurately.
Acts 18:27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brethren encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed,
Acts 18:28 for he powerfully confuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
Acts 19:1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples.
Acts 19:2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Acts 19:3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
Acts 19:4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”
Acts 19:5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

John 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
John 1:7 He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him.
John 1:8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.
John 1:9 The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world.
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.
John 1:11 He came to his own home, and his own people received him not.
John 1:12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God;
John 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.
John 1:15 (John bore witness to him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'”)
John 1:16 And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace.
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.
John 1:19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
John 1:20 He confessed, he did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
John 1:21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
John 1:22 They said to him then, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
John 1:23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
John 1:24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
John 1:25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
John 1:26 John answered them, “I baptize with water; but among you stands one whom you do not know,
John 1:27 even he who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
John 1:28 This took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, for he was before me.’
John 1:31 I myself did not know him; but for this I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
John 1:32 And John bore witness, “I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
John 1:33 I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, `He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’
John 1:34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
John 1:35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples;
John 1:36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
John 1:37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
John 1:38 Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
John 1:39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
John 1:40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
John 1:41 He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
John 1:42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
John 1:43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. And he found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”
John 1:44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
John 1:45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
John 1:46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
John 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”
John 1:48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
John 1:49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
John 1:50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.”
John 1:51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”
John 3: 22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the land of Judea; there he remained with them and baptized.
John 3: 23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptized.
John 3: 24 For John had not yet been put in prison.
John 3: 25 Now a discussion arose between John’s disciples and a Jew over purifying.
John 3: 26 And they came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him.”
John 3: 27 John answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven.
John 3: 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.
John 3: 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full.
John 3: 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3: 31 He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth, and of the earth he speaks; he who comes from heaven is above all.
John 3: 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony;
John 3: 33 he who receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.
John 3: 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for it is not by measure that he gives the Spirit;
John 3: 35 the Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
John 3: 36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.
John 4:1 Now when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
John 4:2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),
John 4:3 he left Judea and departed again to Galilee.
John 5:31 If I bear witness to myself, my testimony is not true;
John 5:32 there is another who bears witness to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is true.
John 5:33 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
John 5:34 Not that the testimony which I receive is from man; but I say this that you may be saved.
John 5:35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
John 5:36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has granted me to accomplish, these very works which I am doing, bear me witness that the Father has sent me.
John 10:39 Again they tried to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.
John 10:40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John at first baptized, and there he remained.
John 10:41 And many came to him; and they said, “John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.”
John 10:42 And many believed in him there.
