What kind of people ought you to be?',

Back to The Pastor's Morning Visit

"Since everything will be destroyed in this way—what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives!" 2 Peter 3:11

The people of God are expected to be different from the world. They profess to have another Spirit in them, and to be the sons of God. They believe that the present earth and everything in it will be burned up. They look for a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. They confess to be strangers and pilgrims here on earth.

What kind of people then, ought we to be?

Surely we ought to set little value on the things of time—and aim at the things which are eternal.

We ought to be watchful, prayerful, diligent, holy, patient, thankful, and expectant.

Surely, we ought to . . .
be contented with such earthly things as we have;
give all diligence to make our calling and election sure;
and rejoice in our glorious destination!

We ought to walk as Jesus walked.

We ought to live as Paul lived—dying daily to sin and worldly trifles.

Let us ask, this morning, "Do we really believe that the present earth will soon be burned up and dissolved?"

If so, are we habitually acting according to our beliefs?

Are we laying up treasures for ourselves in heaven?

Are we labouring to be rich in good works, and an honour to our Christian profession?

Is the coming of Jesus the object of our desire and hope?
