Webster’s dictionary traces the origin of the word “cult” from the Latin word cultus, from colere, which means to cultivate or worship. In the latter part of the past century, however, the word “cult” acquired a different meaning. This is largely due to some small religious groups that are different from the established religions. Some of these groups have been notorious and ended in great tragedy. Therefore, most small religious groups are viewed as something sinister and foreboding.

Using today’s terminology, the early Church of God was considered a cult. This is made evident in Acts 28:22, where it was labelled asect. The world then did not formally recognize the New Testament Church because “every where it is spoken against.”

A true believer is left with the task of finding God’s true Church and avoiding worldly cults. All research should therefore be based on and proven by the Bible. This should be accompanied with seeking God’s guidance, since He leads His Church. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said, “I will build My Church.” You may wish to read our booklet Where Is God’s Church?
