The Defeat and Destiny of Demons

In Chapter 4 we looked at the defeat and destiny of Satan and saw that Satan and his angels and all of humanity that do not turn to Christ are destined to eternal punishment in the lake of fire. Demons share this same destiny.

In Matthew's account of the Gerasene demoniac, the demons in the man cried out,..." What do we have to do with You, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" (Matt 8:29). The demons knew the authority of Jesus Christ and that at the appointed time He would assign them to their eternal abode of judgment.

From time to time when spirits are very stubborn and resisting the commands to go, I remind them they have been eternally defeated by Jesus Christ, and the more they torment a child of God, the more will be their torment in the lake of fire.

Where, you may ask, do demons go when they are cast out? Can we assign them to hell? Sometimes people command spirits to go to the pit or to some other place. From the Word of God we have no direction to give such commands. Jesus Himself never gave them. He simply cast them out. On one occasion He told them never to return (Mark 9:25).

Matthew 12:43-45 tells us that when spirits are cast out they pass through waterless or dry places seeking rest. They either look for a new home or seek to return to the one they came from.

This does not mean we need fear that evil spirits will return. See Matt.17
