Lineage of the Messiah

The Messiah would be the "Seed of a Woman."

In this very first prophecy in Scripture (spoken against Satan) God's plan of redemption can already be seen. God would bring forth a man, through the woman, who would crush Satan's power.

Prophecy: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; He shall bruise and tread your head under foot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel" (Genesis 3:15).

Fulfilment: "But when the proper time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born subject to (the regulations) of the Law" (Galatians 4:4).

"And she brought forth a male Child, One Who is destined to shepherd (rule) all the nations with an iron staff (sceptre), and her Child was caught up to God and to His throne" (Rev 12:5).

The Messiah would be the promised seed of Shem.

After the Great Flood, Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth became the fathers of all the nations. God indicated that the Messiah would come through Shem - even before Shem had become the ancestor of Abraham, who was the father of the Hebrew nation.

Prophecy: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem, and blessed by the Lord my God be Shem! And let Canaan be his servant! May God enlarge Japheth and let him dwell in the tents of Shem..." (Genesis 9:26-27).

Fulfilment: "...the son of Shem..." (Luke 3:36).

The Messiah would be the Promised Seed of Abraham.

Prophecy: "Since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed through him, and shall bless themselves by him" (Genesis 18:18).

Fulfilment: "Now the promises (covenants and agreements) were decreed and made to Abraham and his Seed (his Offspring, his Heir)...Who is (none other than) Christ, the Messiah" (Galatians 3:16).

"The book of the ancestry (genealogy) of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the anointed, the son (descendant) of David, the son (descendant) of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1)

The Messiah would be the Promised Seed of Isaac.

Prophecy: "But God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed; and you shall call his name Isaac (laughter), and I will establish My covenant or solemn pledge with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his posterity after him" (Genesis 17:19).

...It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned" (Genesis 21:11).

Fulfilment: "And Abraham was the father of Isaac..." (Matthew 1:2).

"For Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in her old age, at the set time God had told him" (Genesis 21:2).

The Messiah would be the Promised Seed of Jacob.

Prophecy: "I see Him but He is not now; I behold Him, but He is not near; a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall arise out of Israel and shall crush all the corners of Moab, and break down all the sons of Sheth (Moab's sons of tumult)" (Numbers 24:17).

Fulfilment: "And Isaac begat Jacob..." (Matthew 1:2)

The Messiah would descend from the tribe of Judah.

Prophecy: "The sceptre or leadership shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet until Shiloh (the Messiah, the Peaceful One) comes to Whom it belongs, and to Him shall be the obedience of the people" (Genesis 49:10).

"But he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved" (Psalm 78:68 ).

Fulfilment: "...which was the son of Judah" (Luke 3:33).

"For it is obvious that our Lord sprang from the tribe of Judah..." (Hebrews 7:14).

"See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah...has won - has overcome and conquered!" (Revelation 5:5)

The Messiah would descend from David and rule on his throne.

Prophecy: "And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots; and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him" (Isaiah 11:1-2).

"Once for all I have sworn by My Holiness that cannot be violated, I will not lie to David: His offspring shall endure forever, and his throne (shall continue) as the sun before Me" (Psalm 89:35-36).

"Of the increase of His government and of peace, there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that latter time forth, even for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this" (Isaiah 9:7)

Fulfilment: " A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the Son of David..." (Matthew 1:1).

"The Lord God shall give unto to Him the throne of his father, David" (Luke 1:32 ).

"I am the root and the offspring of David" (Revelation 22:16).

The Messiah would be born of a Virgin.

Prophecy: "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign, Behold, the young woman who is unmarried and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel - God with us (Isaiah 7:14).

Fulfilment: "Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place under these circumstances: When His mother Mary had been promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant (through the power) of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:18).
