Life, a Shadow.
Back to Divine Breathings!
What a shadow is the life of man! What a nothing it is!
The time past—that is nothing, like a bird fled from the hand of its owner, immediately out of sight.
Time present—that is a vanishing hour; nay, less, a flying minute, less than nothing!
The time to come—that is uncertain; the evening sun may see us dead! Lord, therefore in this hour make me sure of you—for in the next I am not sure of myself.
Time was, is past—you can not it recall;
Time is, you have—employ the portion small;
Time future is not—and may never be;
Time present—is the only time for thee.
