I Corinthians 11:25

Back to The Bible's Difficult Scriptures Explained!

“After the same manner also He took the cup, when He had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in My blood: this do you, as oft as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Many believe “as oft as you do it” means to take the bread and wine as often as you choose. Is this the case?

The proper explanation arises from I Cor 11:24, and is easy to understand. The Passover is a memorial, “a remembrance.” Memorials are observed on an annual basis. I Cor 11:26 refers to “the Lord’s death,” which occurred on Passover (Christ is “our Passover” – I Cor. 5:7). The Passover is always observed only once a year.

Also, I Cor 5:28 shows that the Passover ceremony is preceded by personal examination. This could not logically be done every day or even every week.
