Chapter Seventeen – The Coming Restoration

Next Part True Peace

Sprinkled throughout the Old Testament, mainly in what are called the Major and Minor Prophets, are scores of prophecies describing a coming “messianic age,” or “Millennium”—a time of universal peace, prosperity and abundance. A time when war and nonstop bloodshed will be a thing of the past. A time when the nature of animals will be changed. A time when Jerusalem, a city in constant turmoil, will be a city of peace. A time when the entire earth will worship the one true God. A time when the world peace mankind has desperately sought for thousands of years will finally be achieved.

All of this, and more, will occur during the rule of the Messiah, which we have proven is Jesus Christ.

But before these prophecies begin to be fulfilled, a time of great trouble will occur. Of this time, Jesus stated, “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matt. 24:21).

Also notice Mark 13:19: “For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.”

Finally, in Jeremiah 30:5, 7: “For thus says the Lord; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace…Alas! For that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble…”

Before the arrival of the Millennium, a time of untold trouble, suffering and destruction will strike the planet. Several passages in the Bible indicate that only ten percent will survive: “Then said I, Lord, how long? And He answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate, And the Lord have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return” (Isa. 6:11-13).

A massive exodus of survivors—sickly, emaciated, emotionally shattered and confused—will come out of the worst time of human anguish and misery ever experienced. Earth will be in a state of chaos and desolation as a result of a coming nuclear World War III, as described throughout the latter chapters of the book of Revelation and elsewhere.

Destruction will be everywhere, nations and cities laid waste. Air, land and waters polluted. Sickness, disease, famine, war, captivity and death will have decimated earth’s population. The world will be in a horrific state. Mankind, under the sway of the devil, will have brought itself to the brink of total annihilation. It will only be Jesus’ direct intervention that will prevent this from occurring (Matt. 24:22; Mark 13:20).

Earth will be desperately in need of restoration, which the Bible states will occur: “The times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution[restoration, reconstitution] of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 3:19-21).

The all-powerful, living Jesus Christ will soon return to restore planet earth to a condition that God had always intended. And the “saints of the most High” (Dan. 7:18, 27), or true Christians, will be resurrected to assist Christ in this restoration process. A new world—a new society, a new way of life, a truly utopian world—is coming!

God’s Government on Earth

Christ’s first task will be to bring peace and order to a war-torn, chaotic world. Having utterly failed, man’s governments will be replaced by the perfect government of God. Though not a government by the people, it will truly be a government for the people—for the ultimate good of mankind. Greed, corruption, strife, endless debate, ineffectiveness and compromise in government will be no more.

A bright, shining, wonderful time will dawn, moving humanity past the dark events that will have transpired. God’s government will be guided by and established on right judgment and true justice. Contrary to man’s government, it will be capable of bringing lasting peace and safety.

Notice this: “Of the increase of His [Christ’s] government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever” (Isa. 9:7).

Also notice this: “And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; and shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears: But with righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and He shall smite the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked” (Isa. 11:2-4).

Jesus Christ will have perfect insight and understanding into people’s character. All decisions will be made in love, for the highest good of the people. This will be very different from today, when decisions are often made for the good of those who rule and to the detriment of citizens.

• The resurrected saints will administer God’s perfect government under Christ. They will be spirit beings who cannot be bribed or pressured to deal unjustly. They will not be induced to favour one person over another. Respect of persons—favouritism—will be a thing of the past. The glorified saints will judge as Christ does (Rev. 5:9-10).

• Jerusalem will be World Headquarters for the kingdom of God. Christ will place His earthly throne there (Isa. 2:1-2; Zech. 8:3). • All nations will look to Jerusalem for guidance (Jer. 3:17; Zech. 14:4).

• The kingdom of God’s capital city will be the example for all nations to follow. Jerusalem will be rebuilt to splendour and magnificence—becoming a model city for all others to follow (Isa. 62:1-7).
