Introductory Cover Letter
Dear parents of God’s young children,
We are pleased to present you with your first installment of the Children’s Bible Lessons. You will be receiving one lesson each month until your child finishes the sixth grade. There are seven grade levels (K-6) each with twelve lessons—for a total of 84.
God’s Word states, “Children are a heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is His reward” (Psa. 127:3). In effect, this passage states that children are an inheritance—and a special reward—that God gives to parents. But, like any inheritance or reward, those who receive such must be good stewards of the gift (vs. 5), in this case, children. Being a good parent-steward is not possible without all the necessary tools to properly “Train up a child in the way he should go” so that “when he is old he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22:6). Tragically, because of weak or non-existent training, vast numbers of those who were once God’s youth have disappeared into the world.
You and your children have been given a wonderful new tool to help fulfill Proverbs 22:6. We are excited for you and for the many children who will benefit from these lessons. We can thank the many artists and writers who unselfishly gave their time on behalf of God’s youth.
An important note to all parents: As many of you know, in the past, children in the Worldwide Church of God would finish their lessons at home before discussing them once a month prior to Sabbath services under the guidance of a teacher. Of course, the apostasy has changed all of this. At best, only a very few small congregations may be able to continue this approach in some kind of amended way. In all other cases, it will be the parents—and this is really the most ideal way—who must stand in as teachers in the joyous responsibility of teaching their children about the true God of the Bible. I am calling on all of the parents in God’s Church (and any other brethren who may wish to, or are able to, naturally assist) to take this precious responsibility most seriously!
Be sure to familiarize yourself with each lesson. This will help you to better understand the particular lessons, stories and Bible figures being discussed. Try to make yourself somewhat of an authority on what your children are learning—because they will almost surely have some or even many questions, if you are actively involved, doing your “homework” with them as they learn. In this way, you are helping us to fulfill our responsibility, as the extension of the Elijah ministry, to “turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers” (Mal. 4:5-6).
“Christian” book stores are filled with attempts to teach the Bible to children. But, in a world cut off from God, where none understand the exciting truths of God’s Word, there is an enormous void that these specially-prepared lessons fill. As with The Story of the Bible series, we are not trying to entertain, but rather to educate and inspire the young children of God’s Church. The world offers no hope for young people. Countless millions of little children have no idea why they were born. As a result, surrounded by bad influences, and under the invisible sway of the devil, these same millions have no chance—no real future. The youth of The Restored Church of God—God’s Church—must be different!
It is intended that The Story of the Bible series (for children of all ages) and the regular Spring and Fall Holy Day Coloring Books (for children ages 3-5) serve alongside the Children’s Bible Lessons. Together, these vital publications are intended to keep God’s youth “in the way,” en route to the teenage years, when the AMBASSADOR YOUTH magazine is intended to take over where these leave off. Of course, our booklets on marriage and childrearing overarch all of this material, because there is no substitute for wise and understanding parents working together to build happy families, including godly children.
