Introduction: Breaking Spiritual Strongholds and Healing the Wounded Spirit: Dealing with Root Causes

This book on deliverance and healing covers exclusively on spiritual areas. Spiritual areas are distinct from social, physical, and material areas. Spiritual areas encompass matters experienced in the unseen spiritual realm of the mind, emotions and will.

The matters experienced in the unseen realm cannot be observed by any of us whether in a counseling situation, as an intercessor, as a patient, or as mere listener. The only thing that can be observed in the seen realm is the behavior resulting from the spiritual problem. The behavior is not the problem itself. It is only a symptom or a sign of the actual problem.

The spiritual areas of the mind, emotions and will are referred to as mental health areas in the secular world. They have separated unseen mental health concerns from observable physical health concerns. From a biblical perspective the field of mental health is primarily a spiritual health sphere.

It this spiritual nature of our inner makeup that the secular world finds itself limited to dealing with. Healing the wounded spirit is not just a cognitive, mental or brain chemistry issue. It is beyond that. It is a spiritual matter.

What the secular world calls mental health is referred to as spiritual health in Christianity. It is Christian spiritual health, or simply Christian health. Christian spiritual health encompasses not just mental health, but also emotional health, and the health of the will (inner drive, passion, zeal, self-control).

The primary source in the deliverance and healing process is the Holy Spirit. He is the healer of any wounded spirit or any spiritual wounds we may have. It is deep calling unto deep, the human spirit calling unto the Holy Spirit. Spiritual health is thus a spirit calling unto Spirit being. The Holy Spirit's key requirements from us is that we do our part and also cooperate with him in his deliverance and healing work.

Both spiritual strongholds and healing the wounded spirit are intertwined and are dealt with in the same way. This book lays the principles for the Holy Spirit's healing work. It outlines the areas of our input and how these facilitate the inner healing work of the Holy Spirit. It digs deeper into dealing with the root causes or doorways of spiritual problems that linger in our unseen spiritual makeup. Deliverance and healing comes through dealing with the root causes or doorways of entry for spiritual wounds.

Spiritual health is more essential than any other area of our lives. It is more important than our physical health, physical looks, social health, and our material health (wealth). The bible says, “A man's spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?” Proverbs 18:14.

The human spirit is the engine of a person's life. It is a person's true makeup while his/her body enables the spirit to express itself on earth. The body, under the influence of the spirit, interacts with the physical realm. The spirit rules the body. Our physical bodies in their different makeup of looks, race, gender, genetics and other features are insignificant compared to the importance of our spiritual makeup.

Our spiritual makeup is our treasure deserving all the care far above our physical makeup. It determines our outcomes not only in this life, but in the life to come when Christ returns. It is hoped that this book meets its goal in equipping you and those you serve with effective spiritual health principles. It is a book appropriate for everyone in the body of Christ.
