9:13 What does Jesus mean that Elijah has indeed come?
(cp Mk 9:11-13) Jesus refers to John the Baptist here as representing Elijah, not in person, but in spirit and in power (cp Mt 11:14, 17:10-13, Lk 1:13-17). Elijah himself will come as one of God's two witnesses in the middle of the tribulation, prior to the second coming of Christ (cp Mal 4:5-6; Rev 11:3-12).
