3:1-5 How are we to understand what Paul says here?

We learn from this that Paul did not need a letter of commendation to prove himself to the Corinthian church. He founded the church in the first place, and so the Corinthians themselves were his letter of commendation.

Their transformed lives in Christ were like an open letter that could be seen and read by all men as a testimony to Paul's faithfulness to the truth of his gospel message to them. They were Paul's letter of commendation from Christ Himself, not written in ink - like the testimonials of Paul's opponents - but on their hearts.

Paul took no credit himself for winning the Corinthians to Christ. The ability to do it came from God.
