1:15-18 What exactly is Paul saying here?
Paul was telling the Philippians here that his detractors in Rome did really preach the gospel, but from selfish ambition.
Their motives were not pure. They used Paul's imprisonment as an opportunity to promote themselves and discredit Paul.
Paul's supporters on the other hand were motivated by genuine affection for Paul and preached from their love for him.
They knew that Paul's imprisonment was fulfilling God's purpose for him at that time while furthering the gospel (cp Ac 23:11; 27:23-24; 28:16, 30-31).
