10:9-14 What do we learn here?

(cp Mk 6:7-12; Lk 9:1-5). We learn from these scriptures that the disciples were to trust in God’s provision through the generosity of the people for their needs to be met, not in their own resources.

They are not to worry about not having sufficient cash reserves or not having made provision for their future well-being before venturing into the field of service. If they trust God, they will lack for nothing (cp Lk 22:35).

Some Christians have a problem with the fact that in both Mt 10 and Lk 9 Jesus forbids the disciples carrying a staff, whereas in Mk 6 He permits it.

This is explained by the word provide in Mt 10 – it means to procure or acquire by purchase or otherwise. The disciples were to take only what they already had; they were not to buy anything new for their journey. (See also comments on Mk 6:7).
