Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

1 It happened at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a Adullamite called Hira.

2 And Judah saw there the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua, took it, and it was her.

3 She conceived and gave birth to a son and named him Er.

4 She conceived again and bore a son and named him Onan.

5 still gave birth to another son and named him Shelah: and he was in Quezib who gave it birth.

6. Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

7 But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the eyes of the LORD and the LORD slew him.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife and fulfill your duty as her brother, and raise up seed to thy brother.

9 And Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, and it turned out that when it came to his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground so as not to give seed to his brother.

10 But what he did was evil in the eyes of the Lord, and he also took his own life.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law: Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah grows up, he thought: I'm afraid he will also die like his brothers. So Tamar went and stayed at his father.

12. They spent many days and killed the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife. And after the match, Judah went up to his sheep shearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hira Adullamite.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying to him:Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 Then she took off her widow's clothes andis covered with a veil, wrapped well and sat at the entrance to Enaim is on the way to Timnath, he saw that Shelah had grown, and shestill had not been given per woman.

15 When Judah saw her, thought she was a harlot, for she had covered her face.

16 And it was diverted to her by the way, hesaid: Come, let me be with you not knowing it was his daughter. And she said: What I'll be with me?

17 He answered, I will send you a kid of the goats in the herd. And she said, you give me a pledge until you send?

18 And he said, What pledge shall I have to give? And she said, Thy signet, cord and staff that is in hand. And he 's given and it was her, and she conceived by him.

19 Then she arose and went, had removed her veil and put on her widow's clothes.

20. When Judah sent the kid by his friend Adullam, to recover the piece of woman's hand, not found.

21 And he asked the men of the place, saying, Where is the harlot that was openly was, by the way? And they said, that there has been no whore.

22 And he went back to Judah, and he said, did not find it, and besides, men of the place said: "Here there has been no whore."

23 Then Judah said, Let her keep the clothes, so we're not because of mockery. You see, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found.

24. It happened as three months, told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot, and behold, it has become pregnant because of sexual immorality. And Judah said, Bring her out and be burned.

25 And when was brought forth, she sent word to his father: The man who owns these things I am pregnant. He added: "Please examine and see who is the label, this cord and this staff.

26 Judah 's acknowledged, and said: She is more righteous than I, because I did not giveper woman at my son Shelah. And never again to have more sex with her.

27. It happened while giving birth, behold, there were twins in her womb.

28 It happened, moreover, that while giving birth, one of them pulled out his hand, and the midwife 's took and tied a thread scarlet in his hand, saying, This came out first.

29 But behold, it happened that when he withdrew his hand, his brother left. She said, What hast thou broken! So they named him Fares.

30 Then came his brother who had the threadscarlet hand, and he was named Zara.

Genesis 39

Joseph prospers in Egypt

1 When Joseph was taken to Egypt, Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

2 And the LORD was with Joseph, who became a prosperous man, and was in the house of his Egyptian master.

3 And his master saw that the Lord was with him and the LORD gave him success in his hand what he was doing.

4 So Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his personal servant, and made him overseer of his house in his hand and gave everything he owned.

5 And it happened that from the time it made him overseer over his house and everything he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake, and the blessing of the LORD was on everything he owned in the home and field.

6 So all I had left it in Joseph's hand, and with him there did not care about anything except the food he ate. And Joseph was a dashing figure and good-looking.

Joseph and Potiphar's wife

7. It happened after these things that his master's wife looked at Joseph with desire and she said, Lie with me.

8 But he refused and told his master's wife: When I was here, my master does not care about anything in the house, and put my hand in everything he has.

9 There is no bigger than me in this house, and nothing has refused me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

10 And she spoke to Joseph day after day, but he agreed to sleep with her or to be with her.

11 But it happened one day he came home to do their job, and there was no man of the house there within;

12 then she grabbed clothes, saying, Lie with me! But he left his garment in her hand, and fled outside.

13 And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

14 men called home and said, Behold, has brought us a Hebrew to mock us, came to me to have sex with me, but I cried with a loud voice.

15 And it happened that when he heard that I raised my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.

16 And she left with his clothes on him until his master came home.

17 Then she spoke these words, saying, He came to me the Hebrew slave you brought us, to mock me;

18 and when I raised my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.

Joseph thrown into jail

19. It came about when his master heard the words of his wife spoke to him, saying, This is what made me your slave, his anger was kindled.

20 And Joseph's master took him and threw him in jail, in the place where prisoners were confined the king, and remained in jail.

21 But the LORD was with Joseph and showed himhis mercy, and gave him favor in the eyes of the keeper of the prison.

22 And the keeper of the prison relied on Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in prison, and everything that was done there he was responsible.

23 The chief jailer did not monitor anything that was under the responsibility of Joseph, because the Lord was with him and everything he undertook, the LORD gave him success.
