No. 1: "Praise To The Lord, The Almighty."
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near,
Join me in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under his wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e'er have been
Granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee!
Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed thee.
How oft in grief hath not he brought thee relief,
Spreading his wings to o'ershade thee!

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
Gladly for aye we adore him.

No. 4: "Come, Thou Fount Of Every Blessing."
Come, Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount--I'm fixed upon it--
Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I'm come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand'ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.

No. 11: "O, Worship The King."
O worship the King, all glorious above,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

O tell of His might, O sing of His grace,
Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old;
Established it fast by a changeless decree,
And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

O measureless might! Ineffable love!
While angels delight to worship Thee above,
The humbler creation, though feeble their ways,
With true adoration shall all sing Thy praise.

No. 13: "Oh! For A Thousand Tongues To Sing."
O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace.

My gracious Master and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honors of thy Name.

Jesus, the Name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;
'Tis music in the sinner's ears,
'Tis life, and health, and peace.

He breaks the power of reigning sin,
He sets the pris'ner free;
His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

He speaks and, listening to his voice,
New life the dead receive;
The mournful, broken hearts rejoice;
The humble poor believe.

No. 15: "O! Day Of Rest And Gladness."
O day of rest and gladness,
O day of joy and light,
O balm of care and sadness,
Most beautiful, most bright;
On thee the high and lowly,
Through ages joined in tune,
Sing Holy, Holy, Holy,
To the great God Triune,

On thee, at the creation,
The light first had its birth;
On thee, for our salvation,
Christ rose from depths of earth;
On thee our Lord, victorious,
The Spirit sent from heav'n;
And thus on thee, most glorious,
A triple light was giv'n.

Thou art a port protected
From storms that round us rise;
A garden intersected
With streams of Paradise;
Thou art a cooling fountain
In life's dry, dreary sand;
From thee, like Pisgah's mountain,
We view the promised land.

Today on weary nations
The heav'nly manna falls;
To holy convocations
The silver trumpet calls,
Where gospel light is glowing
With pure and radiant beams,
And living water flowing
With soul-refreshing streams.

New graces ever gaining
From this our day of rest,
We reach the rest remaining
To spirits of the blest.
To Holy Ghost be praises,
To Father and to Son;
The church her voice upraises
To thee, blest Three in One.

No. 16: "Safely Through Another Week."
Safely through another week
God has brought us on our way;
Let us now a blessing seek,
Waiting in his courts today;
Day of all the week the best,
Emblem of eternal rest.

While we pray for pard'ning grace,
Through the dear Redeemer's Name,
Show thy reconciled face;
Take away our sin and shame;
From our worldly cares set free,
May we rest this day in thee.

Here we come thy Name to praise,
Let us feel thy presence near;

Conquer sinners, comfort saints;
May the fruits of grace abound,
Bring relief for all complaints:
Thus may all our Sabbaths prove,
Till we join the church above.

No. 19: "Thee We Adore, Eternal Lord."
Thee we adore, eternal Lord!
We praise thy name with one accord.
Thy saints, who here thy goodness see,
Through all the world do worship thee.

To thee aloud all angels cry,
The heavens and all the pow'rs on high:
Thee, holy, holy, holy king,

Eternal anthems to thy praise.

From day to day, O Lord, do we
Exalt and highly honor thee!
Thy name we worship and adore,
World without end, for evermore.

No. 26: "Lord, Dismiss Us With Thy Blessing." Lord, dismiss us with thy blessing;
Fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, thy love possessing,
Triumph in redeeming grace:
O refresh us, O refresh us,
Traveling through this wilderness.

Thanks we give and adoration
For thy gospel's joyful sound:
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound:
Ever faithful, ever faithful,
To the truth may we be found.

So that when thy love shall call us,
Saviour, from the world away,
Let no fear of death appall us,
Glad thy summons to obey:
May we ever, may we ever,
Reign with thee in endless day.

No. 27: "Holy, Holy, Holy."
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

No. 28: "All Glory Be To Thee Most High."
All glory be to thee, Most High, To thee all adoration; In grace and truth thou drawest nigh To offer us salvation; Thou showest thy good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again; We praise thy Name for ever.

We praise, we worship thee, we trust, And give thee thanks for ever, O Father, for thy rule is just And wise, and changes never; Thy hand almighty o'er us reigns, Thou doest what thy will ordains; 'Tis well for us thou rulest.

O Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, Son of the Heavenly Father, O thou who hast our peace restored, The straying sheep dost gather, Thou Lamb of God, to thee on high Out of the depths we sinners cry: Have mercy on us, Jesus!

O Holy Spirit, precious gift, Thou Comforter unfailing, From Satan's snares our souls uplift, And let thy power, availing, Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Saviour's blood was shed; We trust in thee to save us.

No. 30: "Round The Lord In Glory Seated." Round the Lord in glory seated, Cherubim and seraphim Filled his temple, and repeated Each to each the alternate hymn: "Lord thy glory fills the heaven, Earth is with its fulness stored; Unto thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord!"

Heaven is still with glory ringing, Earth takes up the angels' cry, "Holy, holy, holy," singing, "Lord of hosts, the Lord most high." With his seraph train before him, With his holy church below, Thus conspire we to adore him, Bid we thus our anthem flow:

"Lord, thy glory fills the heaven, Earth is with its fulness stored; Unto thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord!" Thus thy glorious Name confessing, We adopt thine angels' cry, "Holy, holy, holy," blessing Thee, the Lord of Hosts most high.

No. 39: "The Heavens Declare Thy Glory." The heav'ns declare thy glory, The firmament thy pow'r; Day unto day the story Repeats from hour to hour; Night unto night replying, Proclaims in every land, O Lord, with voice undying, The wonders of thy hand.

The sun with royal splendor Goes forth to chant thy praise, And moonbeams soft and tender Their gentler anthem raise; Over every tribe and nation The music strange is poured, The song of all creation To thee, creation's Lord.

All heaven on high rejoices To do its Maker's will, The stars with solemn voices Resound thy praises still; So let my whole behavior, Thoughts, words, and actions be, O Lord, my Strength, my Saviour, One ceaseless song to thee.

No. 41: "The Spacious Firmament On High." The spacious firmament on high with all the blue ethereal sky and spangled heavens, a shining frame, Their great Original proclaim. Th'unwearied sun, from day to day, does his Creator's power display and publishes to every land the work of an almighty hand.

Soon as the evening shades prevail, the moon takes up the wondrous tale and nightly, to the listening earth, Repeats the story of her birth. Whilst all the stars that 'round her burn and all the planets in their turn confirm the tidings as they roll and spread the truth from pole to pole.

What, though in solemn silence all move 'round this dark terrestrial ball? What, though no real voice nor sound amidst the radiant orbs be found? In reason's ear they all rejoice and utter forth a glorious voice, forever singing as they shine, "The hand that made us is divine."

No. 57: "O Come, O Come, Immanuel." O come, O come, Immanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! rejoice! Immanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan's tyranny; From depths of hell Thy people save, And give them vict'ry o'er the grave. Rejoice! rejoice! Immanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here: And drive away the shades of night, And pierce the clouds and bring us light. Rejoice! rejoice! Immanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, Thou Key of David, come, And open wide our heav'nly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery. Rejoice! rejoice! Immanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.

No. 59: "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing." Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King: Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th'angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King."

Christ, by highest heav'n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold him come, Offspring of the Virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail th'incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hail, the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris'n with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth.

No. 68: "All My Heart This Night Rejoices." All my heart this night rejoices As I hear Far and near Sweetest angel voices. "Christ is born," their choirs are singing Till the air Everywhere Now with joy is ringing.

Forth today the Conqueror goeth, Who the foe, Sin and woe, Death and hell, o'erthroweth. God is man, man to deliver; His dear Son Now is one With our blood forever.

Shall we still dread God's displeasure, Who, to save, Freely gave His most cherished treasure? To redeem us, he hath given His own Son From the throne Of his might in heaven.

He becomes the Lamb that taketh Sin away And for aye Full atonement maketh. For our life his own he tenders; And our race, By his grace, Meet for glory renders.

Hark! a voice from yonder manger, Soft and sweet, Doth entreat: "Flee from woe and danger, Brethren, from all ills that grieve you You are freed; All you need I will surely give you."

Come, then, banish all your sadness, One and all, Great and small; Come with songs of gladness. Love him who with love is glowing; Hail the star, Near and far Light and joy bestowing.

Dearest Lord, thee will I cherish. Though my breath Fail in death, Yet I shall not perish, But with thee abide for ever There on high, In that joy Which can vanish never.

No. 74: "Alas, And Did My Saviour Bleed?" Alas! and did my Saviour bleed, And did my Sovereign die! Would he devote that sacred head For such a worm as I!

Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree! Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature's sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face While his dear cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt mine eyes in tears.

But drops of grief can ne'er repay The debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away, 'Tis all that I can do.

No. 75: "Beneath The Cross Of Jesus." Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, The shadow of a mighty Rock Within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat, And the burden of the day.

Upon the cross of Jesus Mine eye at times can see The very dying form of One Who suffered there for me: And from my stricken heart with tears Two wonders I confess, The wonders of redeeming love And my own worthlessness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow For my abiding-place: I ask no other sunshine than The sunshine of his face; Content to let the world go by, To know no gain nor loss; My sinful self my only shame, My glory, all the cross.

No. 76: "In the Cross Of Christ I Glory." In the cross of Christ I glory, Tow'ring o'er the wrecks of time; All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life o'er-take me, Hopes deceive, and fears annoy, Never shall the cross forsake me; Lo! it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming Light and love upon my way, From the cross the radiance, streaming, Adds more luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, By the cross are sanctified; Peace is there, that knows no measure, Joys that thro' all time abide.

No. 771: "When I Survey The Wondrous Cross." When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

No. 82: "Christ The Lord Is Risen Today." "Christ the Lord is risen today," Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say; Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high; Alleluia! Sing ye heav'ns, and earth, reply: Alleluia!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Alleluia! Christ has burst the gates of hell: Alleluia! Death in vain forbids his rise; Alleluia! Christ hath opened Paradise. Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King; Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once he died, our souls to save; Alleluia! Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Soar we now where Christ has led, Alleluia! Following our exalted Head; Alleluia! Made like him, like him we rise: Alleluia! Ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Alleluia!

Hail, the Lord of earth and heav'n! Alleluia! Praise to thee by both be giv'n; Alleluia! Thee we greet triumphant now; Alleluia! Hail, the Resurrection Thou! Alleluia!

No. 84: "The Strife Is O'er, The Battle Done." Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The strife is o'er, the battle done; The victory of life is won; The song of triumph has begun. Alleluia!

The pow'rs of death have done their worst, But Christ their legions hath dispersed: Let shouts of holy joy outburst. Alleluia!

The three sad days have quickly sped; He rises glorious from the dead: All glory to our risen head! Alleluia!

He closed the yawning gates of hell; The bars from heav'n's high portals fell: Let hymns of praise his triumphs tell. Alleluia!

Lord, by the stripes which wounded thee, From death's dread sting thy servants free, That we may live and sing to thee, Alleluia!

No. 106: "Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned." Majestic sweetness sits enthroned Upon the Saviour's brow; His head with radiant glories crowned, His lips with grace over flow.

No mortal can with him compare, Among the sons of men; Fairer is he than all the fair That fill the heavenly train.

He saw me plunged in deep distress, He flew to my relief; For me he bore the shameful cross, And carried all my grief.

To him I owe my life and breath, And all the joys I have; He makes me triumph over death, And saves me from the grave.

To heav'n, the place of his abode, He brings my weary feet; Shows me the glories of my God, And makes my joys complete.

Since from his bounty I receive Such proofs of love divine, Had I a thousand hearts to give, Lord, they should all be thine.

No. 112: "Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee." Jesus, the very thought of thee With sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far thy face to see, And in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame, Nor can the mem'ry find, A sweeter sound than thy blest Name, O Saviour of mankind.

O Hope of ev'ry contrite heart, O Joy of all the meek, To those who fall, how kind thou art! How good to those who seek!

But what to those who find? Ah, this Nor tongue nor pen can show: The love of Jesus, what it is None but his loved ones know.

Jesus, our only Joy be thou, As thou our Prize wilt be; Jesus, be thou our Glory now, And through eternity.

No. 1262: " 'Tis Not That I Did Choose Thee." 'Tis not that I did choose thee, For, Lord, that could not be; This heart would still refuse thee, Hadst thou not chosen me. Thou from the sin that stained me Hast cleansed and set me free; Of old thou hast ordained me, That I should live to thee.

'Twas sovereign mercy called me And taught my op'ning mind; The world had else enthralled me, To heavenly glories blind. My heart owns none before thee, For thy rich grace I thirst; This knowing, if I love thee, Thou must have loved me first.

No. 136: "Amazing Grace, How Sweet The Sound." Amazing grace—how sweet the sound— That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found— Was blind, but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!

Thro' many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

And when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess within the veil A life of joy and peace.

When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we've first begun.

No. 137: "Rock Of Ages, Cleft For Me." Rock of Ages, cleft for me Let me hide myself in thee; Let the water and the blood, From thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure, Cleanse me from its guilt and pow'r.

Not the labors of my hands Can fulfil thy law's demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears for ever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to thy cross I cling; Naked, come to thee for dress, Helpless, look to thee for grace; Foul, I to the Fountain fly; Wash me, Saviour, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyelids close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee.

No. 140: "There Is A Fountain Filled With Blood." There is a fountain filled with blood, Drawn from Immanuel's veins; And sinners, plunged beneath that flood, Lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see That fountain in his day; And there have I, as vile as he, Washed all my sins away.

E'er since by faith I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply, Redeeming love has been my theme, And shall be till I die.

Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood Shall never lose its power, Till all the ransomed church of God Be saved, to sin no more.

No. 145: "Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken." Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for his own abode: On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, Thou may'st smile at all thy foes.

See the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters, And all fear of want remove; Who can faint, while such a river Ever flows their thirst t'assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age.

Round each habitation hov'ring, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a cov'ring, Showing that the Lord is near: Thus deriving from their banner Light by night and shade by day, Safe they feed upon the manna Which he gives them when they pray.

Saviour, if of Zion's city I, through grace, a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy Name: Fading is the worldling's pleasure, All his boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Zion's children know.

No. 146: "I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord." I love thy Kingdom, Lord, The house of thine abode, The church our blest Redeemer saved With his own precious blood.

I love thy church, O God: Her walls before thee stand, Dear as the apple of thine eye, And graven on thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall, For her my prayers ascend; To her my cares and toils be giv'n, Till toils and cares shall end.

Beyond my highest joy I prize her heav'nly ways, Her sweet communion, solemn vows, Her hymns of love and praise.

Jesus, thou Friend Divine, Our Saviour and our King, Thy hand from ev'ry snare and foe Shall great deliv'rance bring.

Sure as thy truth shall last, To Zion shall be giv'n The brightest glories earth can yield, And brighter bliss of heav'n.

No. 151: "O Word of God Incarnate" O Word of God Incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O light of our dark sky; We praise thee for the radiance That from the hallowed page, A lantern to our footsteps Shines on from age to age.

The church from her dear Master Received the gift divine, And still that light she lifteth O'er all the earth to shine. It is the golden casket, Where gems of truth are stored; It is the heav'n-drawn picture Of Christ, the living Word.

It floateth like a banner Before God's host unfurled; It shineth like a beacon Above the darkling world. It is the chart and compass That o'er life's surging sea, 'Mid mists and rocks and quicksands, Still guides, O Christ, to thee.

O make thy church, dear Saviour, A lamp of purest gold, To bear before the nations Thy true light, as of old. O teach thy wand'ring pilgrims By this their path to trace, Till, clouds and darkness ended, They see thee face to face.

No. 156: "How Firm A Foundation." How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, You who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

"Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed; I, I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

"When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with thee thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

"When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

"E'en down to old age all my people shall prove My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love; And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn, Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne.

"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake."

No. 157: "The Spirit Breathes Upon The Word." The Spirit breathes upon the Word, And brings the truth to sight; Precepts and promises afford A sanctifying light.

A glory gilds the sacred page, Majestic, like the sun: It gives a light to ev'ry age; It gives, but borrows none.

The Hand that gave it still supplies The gracious light and heat: His truths upon the nations rise; They rise, but never set.

Let everlasting thanks be thine For such a bright display As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heav'nly day.

My soul rejoices to pursue The steps of him I love. Till glory break upon my view In brighter worlds above.

No. 167: "Jesus Shall Reign." Jesus shall reign where'er the sun Does his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

For him shall endless prayer be made, And praises throng to crown his head; His Name, like sweet perfume, shall rise With ev'ry morning sacrifice.

People and realms of ev'ry tongue Dwell on his love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on his Name.

Blessings abound where'er he reigns; The pris'ner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest, And all the sons of want are blest.

Let ev'ry creature rise and bring Peculiar honors to our King, Angels descend with songs again, And earth repeat the loud Amen.

No. 168: "From Greenland's Icy Mountains." From Greenland's icy mountains, From India's coral strand, Were Afric's sunny fountains Roll down their golden sand, From many an ancient river, From many a palmy plain, They call us to deliver Their land from error's chain.

What though the spicy breezes Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle; Though ev'ry prospect pleases, And only man is vile: In vain with lavish kindness The gifts of God are strown; The heathen in his blindness Bows down to wood and stone.

Can we, whose souls are lighted With wisdom from on high, Can we to men benighted The lamp of life deny? Salvation! O salvation! The joyful sound proclaim, Till each remotest nation Has learned Messiah's Name.

Waft, waft, ye winds, his story, And you, ye waters, roll, Till like a sea of glory It spreads from pole to pole. Till o'er our ransomed nature The Lamb for sinners slain, Redeemer, King, Creator, In bliss returns to reign.

No. 214: "With Broken Heart And Contrite Sigh." With broken heart and contrite sigh, A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry; Thy pard'ning grace is rich and free: O God, be merciful to me.

I smite upon my troubled breast, With deep and conscious guilt oppressed, Christ and his cross my only plea: O God, be merciful to me.

Far off I stand with tearful eyes, Nor dare uplift them to the skies; But thou dost all my anguish see: O God, be merciful to me.

No alms nor deeds that I have done, Can for a single sin atone; To Calvary alone I flee: O God, be merciful to me.

And when, redeemed from sin and hell, With all the ransomed throng I dwell My raptured song shall ever be, "God has been merciful to me."

No. 219: "My Sins, My Sins, My Saviour." My sins, my sins, my Saviour! They take such hold on me, I am not able to look up, Save only, Christ, on thee; In thee is all forgiveness, In thee abundant grace, My shadow and my sunshine The brightness of thy face.

My sins, my sins, my Saviour! Their guilt I never knew Till with thee in the desert I near thy passion drew; Till with thee in the garden I heard thy pleading pray'r, And saw the sweat-drops bloody That told thy sorrow there.

Therefore my songs, my Saviour, E'en in this time of woe, Shall tell of all thy goodness To suff'ring man below; Thy goodness and thy favor, Whose presence from above Rejoice those hearts, my Saviour, That live in thee and love.

No. 238: "My Faith Looks Up To Thee." My faith looks up to thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Saviour Divine; Now hear me while I pray, Take all my guilt away, O let me from this day Be wholly thine.

May thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire; As thou hast died for me, O may my love to thee Pure, warm and changeless be, A living fire.

While life's dark maze I tread, And griefs around me spread, Be thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow's tears away, Nor let me ever stray From thee aside.

When ends life's transient dream, When death's cold, sullen stream Shall o'er me roll, Blest Saviour, then, in love, Fear and distrust remove; O bear me safe above, A ransomed soul.

No. 2452: "Jesus, Lover Of My Soul." Jesus, Lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none, Hangs my helpless soul on thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me! All my trust on thee is stayed, All my help from thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head With the shadow of thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want; More than all in thee I find: Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy Name; I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am, Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; Make and keep me pure within: Thou of life the Fountain art, Freely let me take of thee; Spring thou up within my heart, Rise to all eternity.

No. 268: "O Jesus, Joy Of Loving Hearts." Jesus, thou Joy of loving hearts, Thou Fount of life, thou Light of men, From the best bliss that earth imparts We turn unfilled to thee again.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on thee call; To them that seek thee thou art good, To them that find thee all in all.

We taste thee, O thou living Bread, And long to feast upon thee still; We drink of thee, the Fountainhead, And thirst our souls from thee to fill.

Our restless spirits yearn for thee, Where'er our changeful lot is cast; Glad when thy gracious smile we see, Blest when our faith can hold thee fast.

O Jesus, ever with us stay, Make all our moments calm and bright; Chase the dark night of sin away, Shed o'er the world thy holy light.

No. 291: "My Jesus, As Thou Wilt." My Jesus, as thou wilt! O may thy will be mine; Into thy hand of love I would my all resign. Through sorrow, or through joy, Conduct me as thine own; And help me still to say, My Lord, thy will be done.

My Jesus, as thou wilt! If needy here and poor, Give me thy people's bread, Their portion rich and sure. The manna of thy Word Let my soul feed upon; And if all else should fail, My Lord, thy will be done.

My Jesus, as thou wilt! Though seen through many a tear, Let not my star of hope Grow dim or disappear. Since thou on earth hast wept, And sorrowed oft alone, If I must weep with thee, My Lord, thy will be done.

My Jesus, as thou wilt! All shall be well for me; Each changing future scene I gladly trust with thee. Straight to my home above I travel calmly on, And sing, in life or death, "My Lord, thy will be done."

No. 309: "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing; Our helper he amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great; And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God's own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he, Lord Sabaoth his name, From age to age the same, And he must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, For lo! his doom is sure; One little word shall fell him.

That Word above all earthly powers, No thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through him who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; His kingdom is for ever.

No. 336: "The Sands Of Time Are Sinking." The sands of time are sinking, The dawn of heaven breaks, The summer morn I've sighed for, The fair sweet morn awakes; Dark, dark, hath been the midnight, But dayspring is at hand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuel's land.

The King there in his beauty Without a veil is seen; It were a well-spent journey Though seven deaths lay between: The Lamb with his fair army Doth on Mount Zion stand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuel's land.

O Christ, he is the fountain, The deep sweet well of love! The streams on earth I've tasted More deep I'll drink above: There to an ocean fullness His mercy doth expand, And glory, glory dwelleth In Emmanuel's land.

The bride eyes not her garment, But her dear bridegroom's face; I will not gaze at glory, But on my King of grace; Not at the crown he gifteth, But on his pierced hand: The Lamb is all the glory Of Emmanuel's land.

No. 382: "Once In Royal David's City." Once in royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall: With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And, through all his wondrous childhood He would honor and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he.

And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love; For that Child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heav'n above, And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him, but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high; When like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

No. 412: "Our God, Our Help In Ages Past." Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

Thy Word commands our flesh to dust, “Return, ye sons of men:” All nations rose from earth at first, And turn to earth again.

A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.

The busy tribes of flesh and blood, With all their lives and cares, Are carried downwards by the flood, And lost in following years.

Time, like an ever rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.

Like flowery fields the nations stand Pleased with the morning light; The flowers beneath the mower’s hand Lie withering ere ‘tis night.

Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.

No. 414: "God Moves In A Mysterious Way." God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines Of never-failing skill He treasures up his bright designs, And works his sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust him for his grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding every hour; The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flow'r.

Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan his work in vain. God is his own interpreter, And he will make it plain.

No. 415: "As The Hart When Noon Is Burning." As the hart when noon is burning Pants for springs when waters burst, So for God my soul is yearning, For the living God a-thirst: When shall I, a wand'rer here, In Thy presence, Lord, appear? Daily by my foes derided, Tears they for my food provided.

If fond mem'ry seek to borrow Comfort from the former years, These but stir anew my sorrow, Open ev'ry fount of trears: Unto Zion's gates with song, Oh, how oft I led the throng, Who with joy and praise adore Thee, Keeping holiday before Thee.

Why art thou cast down and fearful? O my soul, why so dismayed? Hope in God, and eyes now tearful Yet shall see His present aid. Down, O God, my heart is cast, Till I think of mercies past; Then to Thee, my spirit weary Turns as from a desert dreary.

As Thy waterfalls resounding, Deep is calling unto deep: Over me, Thine all-surrounding Waves and billow wildly sweep: Yet the Lord will bless my days, I, His loving-kindness praise; And His song, at midnight given, Be my prayer to God in heaven.

Why disquieted within me! Why art thou, my soul, cast down! Hope in God, I yet shall praise Him, Who with joy my life will crown. He, my God, whose wondrous grace Is the help that cheers my face, Comforts me, when tears are blinding, As the hart cool waters finding.

No. 417: "Rejoice, Rejoice This Happy Morn." Rejoice, rejoice this happy morn, A Savior unto us is born, The Christ, the Lord of glory; His lowly birth in Bethlehem The angels from on high proclaim, And sing redemption's story; My soul, extol God's great favor, Bless Him ever for salvation, Give Him praise and adoration!

No. 418:

"From Heaven Above To Earth I Come." From heav'n above to earth I come To bear good news to ev'ry home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, Whereof I now will say and sing.

To you this night is born a child Of Mary, chosen mother mild; This little child, of lowly birth, Shall be the joy of all the earth.

'Tis Christ, our God, who far on high Hath heard your sad and bitter cry; Himself will your salvation be, Himself from sin will make you free.

Now let us all with gladsome cheer Follow the shepherds, and draw near To see this wondrous gift of God, Who hath His only Son bestowed.

Welcome to earth, Thou noble Guest, Thro' whom the sinful world is blest! Thou com'st to bear our misery. What can we render, Lord, to Thee!

No. 419:

"O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High." O, love, how deep, how broad, how high, How passing thought and fantasy, That God, the Son of God, should take Our mortal form for mortals' sake!

For us baptized, for us he bore His holy fast, and hungered sore, For us temptations sharp he knew, For us the tempter overthrew.

For us to wicked men betrayed, Scourged, mocked, in crown of thorns arrayed; For us he bore the cross's death, For us at length gave up his breath.

For us he rose from death again, For us he went on high to reign, For us he sent his Spirit here To guide, to strengthen and to cheer.

All honor, laud, and glory be, O Jesus, virgin-born, to thee; Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Ghost, for evermore.

No. 420:

"O Sacred Head Now Wounded." O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown; O sacred Head, what glory, What bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.

O noblest Brow and dearest, In other days the world All feared when Thou appearedst; What shame on Thee is hurled! How art Thou pale with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn; How does that visage languish Which once was bright as morn!

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered Was all for sinners' gain: Mine, mine was the trangsgression But Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! 'Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor, Vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever; And should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to Thee.

No. 421:

"Lord, Thy Death And Passion Give," Lord, Thy death and passion give Strength and comfort in my need. Ev'ry hour while here I live, On Thy love my soul shall feed. Thou didst death for me endure, And I shun all thoughts impure; Thinking on Thy bitter pains, Hushed in prayer my heart remains.

Thy blest cross hath pow'r to heal All the wounds of sin and strife. Lost in Thee, my heart doth feel Sudden warmth and nobler life, In my saddest, darkest grief, Let Thy sweetness bring relief. Thou who camest but to save, Thou who fearest not the grave!

Lord, in Thee I place my trust, Thou art my Defense and Tow'r; Death Thou treadest in the dust, O'er my soul he hath no pow'r. That I may have part in Thee, Help and save and comfort me; Give me of Thy grace and might, Resurrection, life and light.

Fount of good, within me dwell, For the peace Thy presence sheds Keeps us safe in conflict fell, Stills the pain from dying beds. Hide me safe within Thine arm, Where no foe can hurt or harm; Whoso, Lord, in Thee doth rest, He hath conquered, he is blest.

No. 423: "Praise The Saviour Now And Ever."

Praise the Saviour now and ever; Praise him all beneath the skies; Prostrate lying, suffering, dying On the cross, a sacrifice. Victory gaining, life obtaining, Now in glory he doth rise.

Man's work faileth, Christ's availeth; He is all our righteousness; He, our Saviour, has for ever Set us free from dire distress. Through his merit we inherit Light and peace and happiness.

Sin's bonds severed; we're delivered; Christ has bruised the serpent's head; Death no longer is the stronger; Hell itself is captive led. Christ has risen from death's prison; O'er the tomb he light has shed.

For his favor, praise for ever Unto God the Father sing; Praise the Saviour, praise him ever, Son of God, our Lord and King. Praise the Spirit; through Christ's merit, He doth us salvation bring.

No. 424: "Jesus Sinners Doth Receive."

"Jesus sinners doth receive:" Word of surest consolation; Word all sorrow to relieve, Word of pardon, peace, salvation! Naught like this can comfort give: "Jesus sinners doth receive."

On God's grace we have no claim, Yet to us his pledge is given; He hath sworn by his own Name, Open are the gates of heaven. Take to heart this word and live: "Jesus sinners doth receive."

When a helpless lamb doth stray, After it, the Shepherd, pressing Thro' each dark and dang'rous way, Brings it back, his own possessing. Jesus seeks thee, O believe: "Jesus sinners doth receive."

O, how blest it is to know: Were as scarlet my transgression, It shall be as white as snow By thy blood and bitter passion; For these words I now believe: "Jesus sinners doth receive."

Now my conscience is at peace, From the Law I stand acquitted; Christ hath purchased my release And my ev'ry sin remitted. Naught remains my soul to grieve— "Jesus sinners doth receive."

No. 437: "Our Father, Thou In Heaven Above."

Our Father, Thou in heav'n above, Who biddest us to dwell in love, As brethen of one family, And cry for all we need to Thee; Teach us to mean the words we say, And from the inmost heart to pray.

All hallowed by Thy Name, O Lord! O let us firmly keep Thy word, Thy kingdom come! Thine let it be In time and through eternity! O let Thy Holy Spriit dwell With us, to rule and guide us well.

Thy will be done on earth, O Lord, As where in heav'n Thou art adored! Patience in time of grief bestow, Obedience true in weal and woe; Our sinful heart and will control That thwart Thy will within the soul.

Give us this day our daily bread, Let us be duly clothed and fed; Forgive our sins, that they no more May sore displease Thee as before, As we forgive their trespasses Who unto us, have done amiss.

Into temptation lead us not, And when the foe doth war and plot, Deliv'rance from all evil give, For yet in evil days we live; Redeem us from eternal death, E'en when we yield our dying breath.

Amen! Amen! So let it be! Strengthen our faith and trust in Thee, That we may doubt not, but believe, That what we ask we shall receive; Thus in Thy Name and at Thy word We say Amen; now hear us, Lord!

No. 440: "Comfort, Comfort Ye My People."

Comfort, comfort ye my people, Speak ye peace, thus saith our God; Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning 'neath their sorrow's load. Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover, And her warfare now is over.

Yea, her sins our God will pardon, Blotting out each dark misdeed; All that well deserved his anger He no more will see or heed. She hath suffered many a day Now her griefs have passed away; God will change her pining sadness Into ever-springing gladness.

For the herald's voice is crying In the desert far and near, Bidding all men to repentance, Since the kingdom now is here. O that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way; Let the valleys rise to meet him, And the hills bow down to greet him.

Make ye straight what long was crooked, Make the rougher places plain; Let your hearts be true and humble, As befits his holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o'er earth is shed abroad; And all flesh shall see the token, That his word is never broken.

No. 443: "Now Thank We All Our God."

Now thank we all our God With heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things hath done, In whom his world rejoices; Who from our mothers' arms, Hath blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love, And still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us With ever joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us; And keep us in his grace, And guide us when perplexed, And free us from all ills In this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God, The Father, now be given, The Son, and him who reigns With them in highest heaven, The one eternal God Whom earth and heav'n adore; For thus it was, is now, And shall be evermore.

No. 445:

"All Glory Be To God On High."
All glory be to God on high,
Who hath our race befriended!
To us no harm shall now come nigh,
The strife at last is ended;
God showeth His goodwill to men,
And peace shall reign on earth again;
O thank Him for His goodness!

We praise, we worship Thee, we trust
And give Thee thanks forever,
O father, that Thy rule is just
And wise, and changes never;
Thy boundless grace o’er all things reigns,
Thou dost whate’er Thy will ordains;
’Tis well Thou art our Ruler!

O Jesus Christ, our God and Lord,
Begotten of the Father,
O Thou Who hast our peace restored,
And the lost sheep dost gather,
Thou Lamb of God, enthroned on high
Behold our need and hear our cry;
Have mercy on us, Jesus!

O Holy Spirit, precious Gift,
Thou Comforter unfailing,
Do Thou our troubled souls uplift,
Against the foe prevailing;
Avert our woes and calm our dread:
For us the Savior’s blood was shed;
Do Thou in faith sustain us!

No. 446:

"Now Let Every Tongue Adore Thee."
Now let ev'ry tongue adore Thee!
Let men with angels sing before Thee!
Let harps and cymbals now unite!

All Thy gates with pearl are glorious,
Where we partake through faith victorious,
With angels round Thy throne of light.

No mortal eye hath seen,
No mortal ear hath heard
Such wondrous things,
Therefore with joy our song shall soar
In praise to God forevermore.

No. 448:

"O Bless Our God With One Accord."
O bless our God with one accord,
Ye faithful servants of the Lord,
Who in his house do stand by night;
And praise him there with all your might.

Lift up your hands, in prayer draw nigh
Unto his sanctuary high;
Bless ye the Lord, kneel at his feet,
And worship him with reverence meet.

Jehovah bless thee from above,
From Zion in his boundless love,
Our God, who heav'n and earth did frame;
Blest be his great and holy Name.
