GENESIS 6 - 8.

Chapter Six.

 1. And it came to pass when man began to multiply upon the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,

2.that the SONS OF GOD saw (Lit.  'took a good look at') the daughters man that they were fair (Lit.  'good looking'), and they took for themselves all whom they chose –

3. And the Lord said, "This shall not master my spirit in man indefinite since IT is also flesh, and its days shall be 120 years."

4. The NEPHILIM were in the earth in these days (and also after this, since they continued to come, the SONS OF GOD to the daughters of man and they bare unto them the mighty men, who have ever since been known as 'the famous ones' (Lit.  'men of name')

5. And the Lord saw that wickedness (Lit. depravity, moral baseness) of man was great in the earth, and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart evil all day long, and the Lord was sorrowful that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart,

7. And the Lord said "I will utterly sweep away man whom I have created from upon the face of the ground, from man to beast to creeping thing, and to the fowl of the heavens, for I am sorrowful that I made them." But Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord.

9. These (i.e. the foregoing) are the historical records of Noah.

(That which now starts is the beginning of the historical records of Noah's three sons, which continues to Genesis 10:1) Noah was a righteous man, unblemished among his contemporaries.  Noah walked with God.

10.And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11.And the earth was debased before God (Lit. 'in the face of God' which means in effect, 'in defiance of God' and His laws,) and the earth was full of oppression.

12.And God saw the earth, and behold it had been debased, for all flesh had debased its way upon the earth.

13.And God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is full of oppression on account of THEM (i.e. the fallen angels and their giant offspring), and behold I shall destroy them from the earth.

14.Make for yourself a Vessel (Heb. TEBETH, a hollow vessel) of Gopher Wood. (Cypress wood) You shall make nests (or compartments) and shall coat the Vessel from within and from without with Kopher. (Kopher was the resin that exuded from the Cypress tree, and made an ideal varnish for the Gopher wood, thus providing the Ark with waterproofing.)

15.And this is the manner in which you shall make it, 300 cubits shall be the length of the Vessel, 50 cubits its breadth, and 30 cubits its height. (The cubit of those days was about 20 inches, making the Ark a grand ship, 500 feet long, 83 feet broad, and 50 feet high.)

16.A source of illumination you shall make in the Vessel, (this refers to internal lighting, not a window), and you shall finish (the Vessel) to a cubit from above, (i.e. ventilation right round the top, under the covering, 20 inches deep) and the entrance of the Vessel you shall place at its side.  Lowest, second, and third floors you shall make for it.

17.And I, even I, am bringing the FLOOD (Heb.  MABBUL = a violent flowing of waters.  The Greek word is CATACLYSM) of water upon the earth in order to destroy all flesh in which is the SPIRIT OF LIVES from under the heavens.  Everything which is in the earth shall perish.

18.And I will raise up my Covenant with you, and you shall come to the Vessel, you and your sons, and your wife, and the wives of your sons together with you,

19.And from all the living, from all flesh, a pair from each shall you cause to come to the Vessel in order to keep them alive with you, a male and a female,

20.they shall be from the fowl after its kind, and from the cattle after its kind, and from all creeping things of the ground after its kind, Two from each they shall come to you in order to stay alive.

21.And take you for yourself from all food which can be eaten, and gather

it unto you, and it shall be for you and for them for food."

22.And Noah did this. Everything which God commanded him, so he did.

CHAPTER SEVEN.

 1. And the Lord said to Noah, "Come, you and all your house, to the Vessel, for you have I observed to be righteous before me in this generation.

2. From each of the clean beasts you shall take seven pairs, and from the beast which is not clean, one pair, man and his wife.

3. Also from the fowl of the heavens, seven pairs, male and female, in order to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

4. For at the end of yet seven days I shall cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe out (Heb. sweep away, or wipe clean as a dish) all living substance which I have made from upon the face of the ground.".

5. And Noah did everything exactly as the Lord had commanded him.

6. And Noah was 600 years old, and the flood waters were upon the earth.

7. And he came, Noah and his sons, and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him, into the Vessel from the face of the waters of the flood.

 8. From the clean beast, and from the beast which is not clean, and from the fowl, and everything which creeps upon the ground

9. in pairs they came to Noah to the Vessel, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah.

10.And it was (at the expiration of) the seven days that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

11.In the 600th years of Noah's life, in the second month, on the 17th day of the month, on this day all the storehouses of the great deep were broken up (Heb. divided, as was the Red Sea at the Exodus.  The word suggests 'cleaving', as though the whole ocean was thrown apart.) and the floodgates of the heavens were opened,

12.And the rain was upon the earth 40 days and 40 nights.

13.On this self-same day came Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the triad of the wives of his sons with them to the Vessel,

14.they and all the beast after its kind, and all the cattle after its kind,

and all the creeping things that creep upon the earth after their kind, and every fowl after its kind, every kind of bird of every wing,

15.and they came to Noah into the Vessel in pairs from all the flesh in which is the SPIRIT OF LIVES.

16.And those who were coming, male and female, from all flesh they had come (into the Vessel) just as God had commanded him (Noah), and the Lord closed (the door) against him.

17.And the flood was 40 days upon the earth, and the waters increased, and they lifted up the Vessel, and it became high above the earth.

18.And the waters grew strong, and they increased exceedingly upon the earth, and the Vessel travelled about on the face of the waters,

19.and the waters grew strong exceedingly upon the earth, and all the high mountains which are under all the heavens were covered,

20.fifteen cubits above the mountain tops the waters prevailed, and the mountains were covered,

21.and all flesh perished which creeps on the ground, in the fowl and in the cattle, and in the beast and in all the swarm which is swarming upon the earth, and all mankind,

22.bvery being having the breath of the SPIRIT OF LIVES in its face, of everything that was upon the dry ground, died.

23.He blotted out entirely all the living substance which (had been) upon the face of the ground, from man to beast to creeping thing and to the fowl of the heavens, and they were blotted out from the earth, and only Noah remained, and those who were with him in the Vessel.

24.And the waters were strong upon the earth 150 days.

Chapter Eight.

  1. And God remembered Noah and all the living (ones), and all the cattle that were with him in the Vessel, and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided.

2. and the storehouses of the great deep were closed, and the floodgates of the heavens, and the rain was restrained from the heavens,

3. and the waters returned from being upon the earth, GOING AND RETURNING, and the waters began to

abate from the end of the 150th day,

4. and the Vessel rested in the 7th month, on the 17th day of the month upon the Urartu Mountain range,

5. and the waters decreased more and more until the 10th month.  In the 10th (month) on the first (day) of

the month the tops of the mountains were seen
6. And it came to pass at the end of 40 days, he opened the little window of the Vessel, which he had made,

7. and sent forth the raven, and it went forth, GOING AND RETURNING, until the drying of the waters from upon the earth.

8. And he sent forth the dove to see whether the waters were light (abated) from upon the face of the ground,

9. and the dove found not a resting place for the hollow of her foot, and she returned to him to the Vessel,

for water was (still) upon the face of all the earth, and he stretched forth his hand and took her, and brought
her to him in the Vessel.

10.And he waited yet seven other days, and continued to send the dove from the Vessel,

11.And the dove came to him at evening time, and behold, there was in her mouth an olive leaf plucked off, and Noah knew that the waters had become light (abated) from upon the earth.

12.And he waited yet seven other days, and he sent forth the dove, and she never again returned unto him.

13.And it was in the 601st year, in the first (month), on the first of the month, that the waters were dried up from upon the earth, and Noah removed the cover of the Vessel, and he saw and beheld that the face of the ground had become dry.

14.And on the 27th day of the 2nd month the earth was dry.

15.And God spoke to Noah saying,

16.1'Get away from the Vessel, you and your wife, and your sons, and your sons' wives with you,

17.all the beast which is with you cattle, and in all the creeping them to move away with you, and they shall be fruitful, and

18.And Noah went with his sons and

19.all the living (ones) , all the from all flesh, in the fowl and in the things that creep upon the earth, cause they shall increase greatly in the earth, they shall multiply upon the earth." his wife, and his sons', wives with him, creeping things, and all the fowl, everything treading upon the earth, according to their families they went forth from the Vessel.

20.And Noah built an altar to the Lord, and he took from every kind of beast which is clean, and from all the clean fowl, and he conducted up burnt offerings upon the altar.

21.And the Lord smelled the pleasant (smell), and the Lord said in His heart, "I will not add to curse again the ground on account of man, even though the imagination of the heart is evil from his youthful times and I will not add again to smite all living things as I have done.

22.Yet all the days of the earth, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease.

Please note: this transition has not been made for easy reading.  Rather has the literal meaning of the original language been transmitted, so that one may be able to detect the presence of words that betray information important to our understanding of the Flood, and all that happened in that momentous year.
